For every child who visited the mill, there remains the memory of the 'car in the glass case'.

The car was an Austin 7, initially registered in 1931. Many years later, after the ownership had been transferred between Joseph Lumb & Co and Teddie Lumb, it was stored in a glass case in the boiler house, behind the arch that is still visible.

Teddie Lumb is pictured with the car at his home in East Markham: presumably the car has just been sold. It is currently in Surrey, in its original state.

Photographs and document copies are courtesy of Steve Clarke.
